The contracts for building of Nigeria-Morocco’s gaz pipeline will be signed by 2025

The Moroccan National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM), the bids for the transportation of gas as well as the contracts regarding the construction of the pipeline are expected to be concluded at the end of the year 2025. In addition an organization dedicated to monitoring the work and operations and maintenance are set up. 

The project’s initial funding was offered through the Islamic Development Bank and the OPEC Fund for International Development. The Economic Community of East African States was invited to be an associate in the project that, from the standpoint of geostrategic perspective could be an alternative energy supply alternative. 

Furthermore it was reported that The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) has announced that it is located in the best position to begin the process of implementing the project which could connect Nigeria with Morocco. According to the Moroccan Hydrocarbon Office, the strategic project is expected to contribute to the speeding up of the electrification process, and will ensure the availability of energy. 

The pipeline will extend over 5,600 kilometers and will pass across Benin, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, Guinea the Guinea-Bissau region, Gambia, Senegal and Mauritania before it reaches Morocco as well as connecting other states that are landlocked, such as Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali. 

As for capacity, the planned maximum amount is 30 billion cubic meters of gas annually. In the initial phase, this project will comprise Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal. 

In June 2023 The National Bureau of Hydrocarbons and Mines was able to sign 4 Memoranda Of Understanding Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and operators of oil in four nations which include four countries: the Republic of Guinea, Benin, Liberia and Cote d’Ivoire. Furthermore, other nations also have signed MoUs with Morocco as well as Nigeria. It is a sign of the countries are committed to implementation of the energy strategic project.
